Friday Fun Post – 50mi Bike Ride & Beach Trip

So I missed out on getting the post out on Friday since I had some friends in town and we decided it was time to go to the beach. We headed out to Palm Beach State Park in Watsonville, CA. It was fun seeing my little guy kind of get into the water this time, though he mostly just wanted to roll around in the sand.

It was the first time my friends little girl had seen the ocean & gotten to touch it since they live in Utah.

This is the reason why he is now nicknamed, “The Sandman”

Normally at home there isn’t a pile of sand he jumps on like that. He normally finds me lying on the ground and does the same thing, landing on my chest. Sometimes he’ll catch me as I’m lying down near the couch, and he’ll leap off the couch and onto me.

On Saturday I decided I was going to do my first 50mi bike ride as training for my Yosemite ride next year. My route had about 40mi of flat/basically flat pavement and 10 mi of climbing. I rode from my house to Henry Coe County Park Headquarters, and then back home. I felt pretty good at the top of the climb, but the major headwind on the way home almost did me in. I did make it in 3:28, which I was very happy about.

It was a great day for a race. I haven’t had the chance to photograph many crit races, and I forgot how fun they are. Quick course, lots of turns, and lots of opportunity to photograph the racers. It was warm out there though, and I was wishing that there was a little more shade out there for me to hang out at. It seems the shade is always in the spot I don’t want to photograph at, and never where I plan to photograph.

I was able to catch the first big crash at the finish line, but I missed the second one where the medics were called out.

I also ended up having to head home early, so I only got the first couple laps of the womens race, and I missed the Mens 1/2/Pro race.

Friday Fun Post – Am I Crazy? And a Trip to Yosemite

So the other weekend I drove to Yosemite with my mother/father in law, my wife, and our kid to drop off my in laws as they were off on a 3 week hike of the John Muir Trail. On the drive home I got to thinking to myself, “My in laws are hiking the John Muir Trail, they (and my wife) last year hiked to the top of Half Dome. My wife has done a trail marathon in addition to other 5k, 10k, and half marathons. Its my turn to do something crazy like that.” So while we were driving down Hwy 120 I decided I was going to ride my road bicycle from my house in South San Jose over Tioga Pass to Lee Vining.

According to the route I drew up in Google Maps, my friend and I are looking at an approx. 240 mile ride, climbing approx. 18,000 ft over 2 or 3 days. It looks like I’ve got some major training to do in the next few months, since we’ve got the ride tentatively scheduled for sometime in May.

Otherwise we had a pretty good trip. Our two year old decided after his nap he wanted to throw a big tantrum, but after he got to pet some dogs he was better.

This little guy posed for us for a little while. I was wishing I had my 70-200 instead of just my 85mm f1.4 lens.

When the idea of us getting together for a portrait session the location was pretty easy for me to pick out. We headed out to downtown San Jose to a location I’ve photographed at before to try out some new ideas as well as getting some specific photographs. After we photographed there for a little while, we cruised around the outskirts of downtown looking for some other locations. We found another great one across from and at the Shark tank (HP Pavilion, officially).

San Jose Sports Photographer Scott Mosher was out again at the series finale for the CCCX XC Series at Ft Ord on 6/27. The temperatures started off nice & in the mid 50s, but it ended up getting pretty toasty out there. Luckily there wasn’t any big crashes during the day, though I was starting to wonder once LifeFlight flew overhead a couple times during one of the races.

Oakland Temple Photography: Kimberly & Eric

The Oakland Temple was a great place for wedding photographs today, and the weather gods sure smiled on us today. My assistant and I drove up from San Jose where it was about 75-80 degrees, while some of the wedding party heading down from Ft Bragg/Redding endured lots of rain on the way to Oakland. Luckily we ended up with temps in the mid/high 70s, and at times the clouds came over & the breeze came up. Our wedding for the day was for Kimberly & Eric, who we did engagement photos for while out in Prov0.

We got there a little early to do a little location scouting. I love getting to a location early (even places I’ve photographed before) as it gives me a chance to scout out new locations or angles. I’ve found doing this allows me to get unique photographs for each client though I may have photographed that same location many times before. Arriving plenty early also gives me a little buffer time in the event there is bad traffic or something like that.

Since they had the only wedding that afternoon, they were spoiled in a big way, since we didn’t have to wait for people to move out of our way or speed up our formals to give the other brides & grooms a chance to have their images taken. We also were able to wonder around the grounds and enjoy the day.

Big thanks to Shane for coming out again and helping out with the wedding.

CCCX Downhill #5 6/13/10

It was a warm day out today for the CCCX DH #5 racers, fans, and photographers. I’m not sure what the temp was at the park, but I did see that my car indicated 100 while I was driving through Morgan Hill on the way home.

The course seemed pretty loose & sandy today, especially in the technical sections. I saw a couple riders tires slide out while they were going through the loose stuff. I caught a couple slow motion crashes on camera, and at the end of the day I caught the “second before the crash” for one rider, then had deja vu while watching the next rider crash at the exact same spot and fashion. Luckily he decided to crash on the other side of the trail so he didn’t crash into us. Of course, I don’t think he planned on that. Good to know both riders were ok, as I chatted a bit with them in the medics tent after.

I tried to get a variety of images by moving up & down the course throughout the day. I personally like a good variety

San Jose California Sports Photographer – SB Racing Winter XC Final 5/22/10

Today was a windy race today at Ft Ord. I was at a campout on Friday night, so I drove straight from San Juan Batista to the race. It was pretty cold last night and I was hoping that it would warm up during the day. I think it would have warmed up nice if the wind had ever stopped blowing.

One of the things that was nice about the course (for me) was there was a few places for me to drive around the course and photograph racers at different spot. I just wish those expert racers would just slow down. It would have made it much easier for me to get to a new photograph location before you get there!

If may notice there is a gallery called “1st Climb”. This gallery contains about 25 images that contains multiple numbers, such as 101 & 205. Instead of trying to sort it out by gallery, I decided to put them in their own gallery.

It was a good day for some California sports photography. Sunday was supposed to be in the 70s and sunny so I planned on packing the sunscreen, shorts, and plenty of water. Turns out my hunch to wear pants (also great poison oak protection) and grab my jacket & a long sleeve undershirt (also great poison oak protection) saved my bacon today. Turns out the weather decided to be cold, and at times windy & a little drizzly.

I decided to go try to shoot in completely different shooting locations for this race as I was trying to change it up a little bit from what I normally get. I tried to get a wide variety of images for everyone, including climbing, descending, panning, and anything else I could think of. I’m hoping at least a few people will find an image of them that is different from what they’ve seen so far.

San Jose California Photographer – SB Racing.org Winter XC #4 5/8/2010

Ah, finally, I got to photograph a bike race near my house! Todays race was held in San Jose, California at Santa Teresa County Park. Instead of having to get up at 6-something in the morning, get some breakfast, load up the car, and be on the road by 7, I was able to stay up late, sleep in, and then have my wife drop me off at the park. I thought about riding up to the park, but I really wasn’t in the mood to ride up Bernal Rd carrying my gear, and dealing with the gear/bike while out shooting.

Great weather today at the park, some nice sun and a perfect breeze. Luckily I didn’t get bit by any snakes while I was tromping around in the rocks. The race was put on by SB Racing, and this was the first race I’ve photographed for them.
